Lock Down Leisures

With most of our team hibernating at home, we’re all finding a bit more time for those things we love.
Our Chopping Block group chat is a little less outrageous than it was last Spring, but it’s still full to the brim of the small things we’re enjoying while we’re away from each other.

So I thought, why not share our Lock Down Leisures with you too? Settle in and have a read of what we’ve been up to so far this year…

What we’re reading…

A little late to the party with this one, but James Rebanks’ latest best-seller is everything we need right now. English Pastoral is a love letter to the Northern Fells we know so well. A tale of traditional Cumbrian farming, how rural landscapes are changing across the world and a rallying call to ensure a legacy we’re all proud of.

Harry Potter… again. The escapism of the Harry Potter world is such a treat it’s no wonder so many of us dive head first into Hogwarts, Polyjuice Potion and Quidditch whenever we’re feeling a little low!

If you want something that will make you hoot with laughter and warm the cockles of your heart, Grace Dent’s Hungry is exactly what you need. A memoir of growing up on beige food, the joy of a Cadbury’s Fruit n Nut bar and how gravy can help mend us when we feel utterly broken.

What we’re watching…

Staged (BBC) – David Tennant and Michael Sheen play themselves, two bickering actors dealing with lockdown life. It’s hilarious, features cameos from the great and good of TV, Stage & Film and Michael Sheen’s ever-growing lockdown beard is not to be missed!

Yoga with Adriene (YouTube) –  It is no exaggeration to tell you that Adriene and her super chilled Yoga videos have changed my life. One of our lovely regulars (hi Julie 👋) thinks so too! If you need a little break, pop on one of her videos, take the deepest breath you’ve taken all day and find what feels good.

The Great (Amazon Prime) – A satirical, comedy/drama based on the occasional historical fact. It charts the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia’s history – who doesn’t love a good costume drama?

What we’re eating…

Most of the team are brushing up on their Sunday roast skills and the best of the bunch features a Duck…
Wilding Snacks (you might recognise them from our shelves) have gifted the world a perfect winter supper, Moroccan Spiced Roast Duck. Rich, dark meat, crispy skin and a hint of heat – it’s a total winner!

Steak! We’re obviously biased, but there isn’t many more things we enjoy more than a Dry Aged Steak. Rib Eye, Sirloin, Fillet, Rump – there’s so much variety and whilst the nights are still dark we intend to indulge in those things we love a little more often.

What we’re listening to…

Off Meu with Ed Gamble & James Acaster – With hosts like this you can imagine how quickly an episode of Off Menu descends into comedy anarchy. Each week they invite special guests into their magical restaurant to choose their favourite starter, main course, side dish, dessert and drink. Your face will hurt from laughing so hard!

The xx – The atmospheric indie-pop band’s albums are a perfect soundtrack to pottering around the house. Brooding with flashes of electronica, I’ve been listening back to their award winning debut xx and have fallen in love with them all over again.

Spread the Love!
