One whole year to the day since we flung open our doors and found ourselves at the sharp end.
A year of laughter, hard work, an obscene amount of Cumberland sausages and a hell of a learning curve.
It’s a cliché, but if you’d have told me what we’d be facing in our first 12 months, I would’ve definitely paused a little longer before opening those doors. But wow, I have been and continue to be truly humbled by the support shown by you, our lovely customers.
Let’s not beat around the bush – we’ve faced things I never thought we would. An attempted break in, an almost flood and a global pandemic. It makes my skin crawl to think how differently things could have panned out. But I don’t need to tell you that – things are strange right now and will continue to be strange for a while. I’m just so thankful that we’ve been able to keep going.
So, what do you do to mark the 1st anniversary of opening a shop? Fill your windows with balloons of course! It’s not what we would like to be doing (a get-together with wine flowing and cocktail sausages as far as the eye can see would have been nice), but we wanted to mark this special day somehow.
I hope that in the next few weeks we’ll get a chance to see some more of your lovely faces, as we all try to find a new normal. But until we see you in person, I want to thank a few people – please forgive me if this sounds like an Oscar’s acceptance speech…
Ruth. My rock and best friend. Thank you for taking care of the boys with such grace when I couldn’t be with you and for keeping me plodding on with your never ending positivity. You may have an unhealthy obsession with Joe Wicks now but it’s a price worth paying!
My Boys – you’ve reminded me why I opened the shop in the first place and your silly grins have picked me up when I was feeling down.
The Chopping Block team. I cannot wait for the day we can all get back in the shop together and, to the younger ones, I’m sorry our team chat has descended into absolute anarchy.
My friends and family – thanks for letting me vent when I needed to. It meant more than you could have known.
And last but by no means least, our incredible customers. We would have been screwed without you.
To those who have been with us since last summer, you’ve helped make my shop what it is now. Your honesty and feedback is invaluable and helps me strive for something better every day. To those of you who are newer faces, or perhaps discovered us during lock down, thank you and welcome to the gang! I always hoped we’d be able to create something special at The Chopping Block and you are making that dream a reality. I’ve never felt more connected to our community and have loved getting to know each and every one of you.
Thank you all and here’s to the next 12 months.
